Relieve chronic jaw pain, tension headaches, and teeth grinding without surgery.

For most people, the term Botox® brings to mind smooth, wrinkle-free skin and cosmetic enhancements. However, in the world of modern dentistry, it can be a powerful medical tool for relieving chronic pain.

At Christopher J. Manduzzi, DDS, PC, we use therapeutic injectables to target what in most cases is the root cause of jaw pain, soreness, and tension – the jaw muscles themselves.  Dr. Manduzzi has taken part in extensive training as a certified member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE), bringing advanced neuromuscular treatments to our practice and the greater community of Utica, Michigan.

Is Muscle Tension Causing Your Jaw Pain?

If you frequently experience soreness in your jaws or suffer from frequent headaches, the root cause is often muscular. In fact, numerous studies have identified muscle as the cause of this type of pain in 80% of cases.  Dr. Manduzzi treats the source of the pain, not just the symptoms, for patients experiencing:

  • Chronic Headaches & Migraines
  • TMJ/Jaw Pain
  • Bruxism/Teeth Grinding

Understanding TMJ vs. TMD

While most patients use the term “TMJ” to describe their pain, TMJ actually refers to the joint itself (the Temporomandibular Joint).  The pain and dysfunction associated with this joint is technically referred to as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder).

This disorder is often a cycle caused by stress and habit:

  1. Stress or misalignment causes you to clench your jaw (often while sleeping).
  2. The muscles become overworked and inflamed.
  3. The inflammation triggers pain, headaches, and more clenching.

Why Traditional Treatments Fail: Standard treatments like night guards protect your teeth from grinding, but they don’t always stop the muscles from firing. Botox® breaks the cycle by physically relaxing the muscle, treating the source of the disorder rather than just shielding the teeth.

How Therapeutic Injectables Work

While commonly known for reducing wrinkles, Botulinum toxin (the active ingredient in brands like Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®) acts as a muscle relaxant.

Research indicates that the majority of TMJ disorders are muscular in origin. This means that the pain typically is often not coming from the actual joint, but rather muscles such as the Masseter (jaw) and Temporalis (temple) working overtime.

Why Your Dentist is an Excellent Choice for Injectables

Dr. Manduzzi isn’t just treating your skin; he is treating the important anatomical structures underneath.

While med-spas focus is primarily on the surface, Dr. Manduzzi specializes in the complex relationship between your nerves, muscles, teeth, and bone structure.

  • An Expert in Facial Anatomy: A dentist’s entire training focuses on the head and neck. We know precisely where every nerve and blood vessel is located, ensuring a very safe injection with predictable results.
  • Protecting Your Smile: Injecting the wrong muscle can negatively affect your smile or how you chew.  Because we know and understand your anatomy and your occlusion (the technical term for your bite), we can provide significant therapeutic pain relief while greatly reducing the likelihood of an adverse outcome related to your natural ability to smile or of your jaw muscles to function.
  • The Injection Experts: A typical dentist performs thousands of injections every year. We have a level of manual dexterity and gentle touch that few other healthcare providers can match.

What to Expect During Your Visit

1. Neuromuscular Analysis (The “Mapping”) We don’t guess where you hurt. Dr. Manduzzi manually palpates your face and neck to map your specific trigger points. We identify exactly which muscles are overactive, whether it’s the Masseter (jaw) or Temporalis (temple), to ensure the treatment targets the root cause.

2. Precision Treatment Using ultra-fine needles (much smaller than those used for vaccinations or dental anesthetics), Dr. Manduzzi administers therapeutic micro-doses directly into the target muscles. The process is so gentle that anesthesia is not needed, and is typically a very quick process.

3. The “Forced Relaxation” Over the next 2-10 days, the medication chemically blocks the nerve signals that force you to clench.  This gives your jaw a mandatory vacation, allowing inflammation to subside which breaks the cycle of chronic pain.

The “Side Effect” You Will Love

Our primary goal is to relieve your pain. However, because we treat the facial muscles responsible for tension, you are likely to get a significant aesthetic benefit as well.

Relaxing the muscles in the forehead, temples, and jaws can naturally:

  • Smooth forehead lines and “worry lines.”
  • Slim the jawline (reducing the “square jaw” look caused by the hyperactive masseter muscles involved in chronic clenching).
  • Soften your overall facial profile.

You leave our office feeling better and looking refreshed.  That’s a win-win!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it always the Botox® brand?

“Botox” is a common brand name injectable, but we utilize several FDA-approved neurotoxins including Xeomin® and Dysport®.  Dr. Manduzzi will select the specific formulation that is best suited for your therapeutic needs.

How fast does it work?

Injectables work chemically to relax the muscle.  Most patients feel a significant reduction in tension within 2 to 10days, with full results typically coming by 2 weeks.  In fact, we generally schedule patients back 2 weeks after the neurotoxin has been administered for a follow-up or “enhancement” appointment.  At that time, additional neurotoxin can be administered to achieve the a superior outcome if improvement has happened but additional results are desired.

Will I look “frozen”?

No.  You can certainly expect to have an enhanced appearance but rest assured that you will still look like yourself.  Our approach is therapeutic.  We relax the specific muscles causing pain, preserving your natural facial expressions while eliminating the tension.
